What's Your Road Name?

Isn't it funny that you don't get to choose your nickname? Its always awkward when you tell someone, "My name's Chris, but everybody calls me Duckie."... which is usually followed by silence, and then they call you whatever THEY want to call you. It's fine. That's how it works. You don't get to pick your nickname. (By the way, don't ever call me Duckie. That was only in high school which was a very, very long time ago.)

Now, if you're in a motorcycle club, everybody has to have a road name. Stumpy, Sleazy, Dopey, Sticky. You just do... apparently. Here's a handy chart to determine what you're most likely to be called by the gods of speed. It's based on "What's Your Blues Name?" which coincidentally speaks the same language. Call me a liar.

All right this should be good. Henceforth I shall be known as.....as.... Sticky Lemon McGee?......... ah crap.

It's not usually that cold once the sunshine warms it up from 29 degrees to about 50. Here's a couple tips for staying warm and stylish.
1.) Wear long johns and sweats under jeans.
2.) Do the same on top, so you can remove layers once you warm up. Wear 4 or 5 layers under your leather (including an official Her Majesty's Thunder t-shirt of course)
3.) Take an old t-shirt (or flannel or fleece) and cut out a square face scarf. Fold in half for a double layer.
4.) Apply tiny amount of dish soap inside your goggles to keep from fogging. Wipe off (but don't rinse).
4.) Lined gauntlet gloves.

Now stop crying about being cold and scared of today being Friday the 13th. Layer up and ride.

And say your prayers.

The Great Escape Re-Enacted

The Great Escape, one of the best war films ever made and one of the most daring motorcycle stunts ever performed on film. During filming, McQueen's racing buddy-turned-stunt-double for the film, Bud Ekins jumped 12 feet in the air across 65 feet at around 60 mph. He described the air up there as being total silence, seemingly hanging forever. Motorcycle stunt rider Steve Colley attempts to recreate the famous stunt on a Steve McQueen Desert Racer Metisse Triumph.

Honestly, this is my ideal bobber. Triumph soul, black on black, 16" rear wheel, stock tank, hardtail with a 4" stretch, and as much drop as it can handle. This one is built by Jon Rispante and uses parts from three different Triumph motorcycles. Fork and gas tank were taken from a 1960s T100, the rear fender and many other elements borrowed from a 1966 Bonneville. The main donor was the bike was a 1970 Bonneville.

Rispante completely rebuilt the Bonneville engine, set the carburetor on the TR6, and Boyer ignition kit MAP Mikuni. Headlight is taken from a Model A Ford, tires - NOS Goodyear Super Eagles, 19-inch front, rear 16 inches. Once everything was assembled, painted, he decided to completely eliminate the chrome. An excellent choice for what is a timeless, classic, British motorcycle.

A visit with Jay Lajkov of Vintage Customs

Recently, my buddy Sanders and I took a motorbike road trip and paid a visit to the garage of Jason Lajkov, of Vintage Customs, located just outside Daytona Beach, Florida, USA. I always love meeting talented, creative people who are humble. Jay is one of those people. He's a talented graphic artist who turned into a bike builder. He typically sticks to Yamaha XS650's and Honda CB's but his designs are so inspiring and the principles can be applied to vintage British bikes as well.

I got to see the Speedster in person. And it's spectacular. It was drained of fluids so I couldn't hear it in person, but you can see a video here:

Jay was laid off a last year and decided that what he'd really like to do for a living is take his hobby full-time. He's been doing great with his commissions too. While we were there he showed us a Honda that he was working on for a bike shop in Australia. Apparently down-under, American-made custom bikes sell for four times their normal US asking price.

He hand painted this tank in a process that required tons of masking and remasking. Beautiful!

Jason Lajkov, designer, builder and proprietor at Vintage Customs is quite a prolific builder. Most of his bikes are vintage Yahama 650s and Honda CB's (sorry no British iron) but I find his work extremely inspiring. His ideas can easily be applied to Triumphs, BSAs, Nortons and Royal Enfields as well. Thanks, Jay!

Bull City Rumble 2011 Photos

This year was huge. From the numbers I've heard, on Friday night 60-100 of us rolled up to a tavern, then headed to a local cafe (a place that was predetermined and arranged with the owner. The cafe owner then got upset when so many bikers showed up and said that we were "chasing" away his customers! So the large majority of us tore off to the Fullsteam Brewery in what became a very dramatic show of volume, exhaust fumes and tail lights. It was like a scene out of some 1950s movie. On Saturday, my sweet girls and I set up the Thunderdome and got to hang out with the nicest people you'd ever meet. So many bikes this year!

John Gulliver recently shared this old photo of his Triumph/BSA hybrid or "TriBSA" cafe racer with Her Majesty's Thunder. It's actually much more than just a combination of parts from two bikes. John describes it this way:

"...my home built 'special' Cafe Racer, all alloy 'mini' Bonneville motor ie. splayed head twin carb. 500, 'Gold Star' frame, RRT2 gear box, alloy engine internals. Norton 'Roadholder" forks and 'Commando' TLS brake, Eddie Dow "Superleggera" triple clamp... a lightwight and handy bike...

"It was sold to Simon, Tolkien's grandson, the registration number was SGT, his initials. Enthusiasts will notice this 'photo is cult magazine reversed, for their benefit the bike has RRT2 g/box, all alloy engine, Norton 'Roadholder' Eddie Dow 'Superleggerra' top yoke, 'Bonneville' h/light, Commando 2LS brake and lots of other stuff. The bike was featured in a cult magazine called 'On yer Bike'. Almost nothing in the engine was stock, including alloy t/wheels. all valve gear, Monty & Ward racing c/rods etc. etc. not bad work for a school boy..."

1971 Triumph Tiger Transforms To Aussie Tanker

Inspired by Dave Helrich's Triumph Streetfighter, 52 year old builder Chris Atkinson spent 3 months building his first motorcycle. Recently, Chris shared his project with Her Majesty's Thunder.

Chris tells about his build, "I saw Dave Helrich's, ( Helrich Custom Cycles ), Streetfighter and fell in love with it. Contacted Dave with the hope of him building me one, but the import regs over here in Australia don't allow modified bikes or cars to be imported. So I built one myself, with some help from Dave. I bought a stock 1971 Tiger and went from there. Got it on Ebay from a an old mate of mine I hadn't seen for around 15 years, blew us both away when Dave opened his door.

It has a rigid frame from Factory Metal Works, 4.5" longer and 2" lower, stock motor, stainless drag pipes, tri spark electronic ignition and rectifier, high voltage coils, hand made aluminium guards from 7 Metal West, original wheels powdercoated and stainless spokes, ceramic coated brake hubs/cover plates, aluminium coated tank with 2 days sanding and polishing, Mooneyes spinner cap to lock the tank down, brass inspection caps, MonsterCraftsmen chain tensioner, Biltwell seat mount, custom seat from Helrich Custom Cycles, original front end with progressive fork springs, Woodcraft clipons, lots of hand made brackets, battery box etc. All new wheel bearings, brake shoes, cables, guages, vintage cloth covered wiring, all stainless bolts/nuts. Lots of parts were sourced from Trojan Classic Cycles over here in Australia as well as Lowbrow Customs.

The build took me around 3 months, great fun. I am a beater and painter & usually muck around with cars, so this was a lot easier than doing a car. I have never ridden on the road before until I built her, still on my Learner license at 52 years of age. The coolest learner legal bike around. I love riding it, heaps of fun and a real blast.

Daytona Beach

I wanted to disappear this past weekend. It was sort of a last minute thing so I drove instead of rode, but I visited a few beaches down the east coast (USA) and spent some extra time in Daytona Beach, FL, the legendary location for motorcycle sand racing. Daytona Beach is the only beach where you can still drive (and ride) on the sand beside the shore. While there I happened by Robison's Motorcycles (also known as Robison's Harley Davidson from 1962-1992). I wandered in just to look around and found the legend Joe Robison himself sitting there on a couch, enshrined by walls of motorcycle racing glory. I asked if they minded if took some photos and they immediately offered me a tour of the entire shop including the back areas where the speed bikes of yesteryear were brought in during the days and nights before the big races to be carved, molded, and cast into the iron racing demons of the historic sand tracks. Looking at that endless beach, I ached to grab my own bike and tear out along the water's edge with nothing in my way... into oblivion.

I've been working out of town for the past two months - flying back and forth on the weekends making for a very hectic schedule. I love my work and every minute of my time away, but it's good to be home. I'm blessed to be able to live in the best place on earth. 2000 Mile Epic Ride To Boston

In 2010, my old friend Scott Wilson rode his Harley from Garden City, Kansas to New York City. He says, "In one week, I traveled through 9 states and the District of Columbia for a total of 2000 miles. I saw beautiful scenery, historic sites, and sunsets that took my breath away. After arriving in NYC, I ran the New York City Marathon. I finished in 4 hour and 20 minutes. Thanks to all those who encouraged me and supported me on my adventure..."

Scott came through our area last November and we caught up after many years apart. The next day I rode him out of town on a beautiful fall morning. My 5-second cameo is at 06:28. Enjoy his video below.

DIY Painting Motorcycle Rims on the Cheap

I'll confess, I'm sort of cheap. And impatient to ride. Last weekend I finally painted my motorcycle rims black. I've been photoshopping it for years and finally got around to it. I'm fully aware that powdercoating is the way to go when painting your bike rims, but, here's a quick way to paint your rims yourself using Appliance Epoxy Paint, without even having to remove the tires. This works for car rims as well.

Step 1. Prep.
Thoroughly clean the rims with a degreaser.
Wet sand the chrome and rinse. Allow to dry.
Mask off the rim using playing cards. (Much better than masking tape). They create a very precise mask and it only takes about 5 minutes.

Step 2. Prep some more.
Flip over the wheel and place on a bucket. Use another deck of cards to mask off the other side of the rim to prevent overspray onto the tire.

Step 3. Primer.
Use a self-etching primer. I used Duplicolor - available at auto parts shops. Let dry, lightly sand, add another coat of primer.

Step 4. Paint.
Use Appliance Epoxy paint by Rust-oleum. I recommend painting one side and flipping it over to paint the other side before the first side dries. To keep from marring the wet paint, I propped the rim up on a small bowl, on top of the bucket. The small bowl fits inside the area I'm not painting.

Step 5. Mount Wheels and Ride.

Knightley is the British part of this post since Ducati is obviously an Italian motorcycle. I like the classic silhouette of the girl on the fairinged motorcycle, even if I wished it was the curvier, Victoria's Secret model and real-life motorcyclist, Marisa Miller instead. I captured these from my copy of 2005's The World's Fastest Indian. One of my favorite scenes is the New Zealand beach race. That blur entering the frame from the left is Burt Munro, played by Anthony Hopkins. If you're reading this blog, you already know that the film is about the life story of New Zealander Burt Munro, who spent years building a 1920 Indian motorcycle -- a bike which helped him set the land-speed world record at Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats in 1967. I know vintage motorcycle enthusiasts talk about it a lot, but I love this movie. It reminds me that it's better to be your best at one thing, than being mediocre at several.

Also... get out and ride your motorcycle.

I asked him about the kicker. "It will start, but riding it around takes some rigging. The pedal, once used to start the bike, loses the compression and spring and then just wants to drag on the ground. So to ride it, the thing has to be strapped to the frame. It's very annoying and not practical to ride around town that way. Esp if it stalls, which it likes to do early in the day or after it hasn't been started in a while. Once warmed up though, the thing will ride all day. So the simple answer is, it will start, but it won't be good to ride home. Around the block, we can figure it out. It's not a dream bike...yet. It's still a work in progress."

Cool old Kodachrome photos. I couldn't make contact with the photographer/owner, but these look to be shot in the early 1950s. A funny thing about being born during the Nixon administration is that the world was black and white before 1965. I felt so detached from people, places and history because I never saw them in their natural hues. Now, seeing that time period in real color, they seem unreal, like they're part of a movie set. And yet, now it's easy to see they were real people, and not merely historically recorded figures.

Here's a neat set of British motorcycles: A rocker's Matchless, a cute girl on a blue 1953(?) Triumph, a shiny, new Norton, and a smart looking Ariel among others.

If you've seen the latest trailer for Nanny McPhee Returns, you've no doubt caught the shots of the girder-forked, olive drab, vintage motorcycle with a sidecar. Turns out, the good nanny rides a bike that appears to be a 1948 or older Ariel. The trailer can be seen on YouTube (this link will skip you to the Ariel). Ramping up

I was afraid that shooting a video of loading my motorcycle using my new, tri-fold ramp would guarantee an epic fail. I should have shot it, but it would have been a long, boring feature of me sitting on the bike, in the back of the truck, slowly easing it backward, trying not to end up running over myself on the way down. I was surprised to find it amazingly easy. A wide ramp is the key. I bought mine used, but it's made by DeeZee.

Also, my boys are now expertly trained in the arts of changing the oil and installing seat belts in a 1961 Ford pickup. It was a good Saturday.

Keep Your Goggles From Fogging

I read somewhere that you can use Formula 409 to clean your goggles which creates a barrier so the fog doesn't form inside. I rode this morning for 50 minutes in 40 degrees with a scarf pulled up to my eyeballs with no fog. They even used to use it as a selling point in TV commercials in the early 70s (below). While no solution is permanent, dirtbike.off-road.com reports that you can also effectively use a potato slice or liquid soap. Rub it on, allow to dry, then buff clean.

Below is my regular riding gear. Metal flake Fulmer helmet, Halcyon goggles, black scarf, vintage cafe racer leather jacket.

I bought this vintage Schott Perfecto leather jacket (model #618) recently and it's too big for me. It's a Large or size 45. First email to chris@HerMajestysThunder.com gets it. The jacket has some custom detailing around the pockets and on the cuffs from the previous owner. All the zippers are original and function properly. This jacket is the same style as Brando wore in The Wild One, #618. It still has the original epaulet stars.

Two 1930s Motorcycle Racing Films

I love the old images of the American sport of motorcycle hillclimbing. In the USA, hillclimbing means riding straight up a very steep, unpaved hill to see who can go the farthest. In the case where more than one rider reaches the top, the winner is the one who got there the fastest. In the British Isles, "hillclimbing" is a much different sport, where one races to the top of a hill, on paved, gradual, curving roads where the race looks more like a gran prix.

In the video below, most bikes are Harley Davidsons or Indians, but I spotted at least two that look to be British steeds. That heart shaped Triumph timing case is unmistakable.

Gary Myrick's Custom Triumph

Recently, I interviewed Gary Myrick about his bike. It's 1970 Triumph 750 and is probably unlike any you've seen. Built by Kiyo over at Garage Company in Los Angeles, it's stretched to a full 9 feet 4 inches and it looks painfully awkward. But then, Gary is also a rock star.

Gary: Thought you might like to see this.

HMT: Whoa. Is that yours? Love the brass and bronze details.

Gary: Yes, it's my 1970 Triumph.

HMT: Did you build it yourself or was it delivered to your door one day by the Angel of Death?

Gary: I had it built to my specs. I have full build history too. It's all metal no paint just patina. A 750 with kick and jockey shift. A amazing rider. Been in 3 magazines featured. It was built to my design by Kiyo at the garage company. He has built a shovel head for me a few years back. I dreamed it up but he is the real talent. I am a musician/ artist and design is part of my thing.

HMT: Got any photos of you on it? It looks like... a sketchy ride.

Gary: It's a real work of art and amazing one of a kind old school all the way rider. I've had many hot rods, harleys all old school as I shift and often foot clutch. I love the 1920s-1960s bikes,cars,all style and wanted a bare bones metal finish Triumph only having HD in past.

HMT: Where are you now?

Gary: I'm from Texas living in Los Angeles and lived in London for 2 years playing writing with Clash bassist in a band Havana 3AM . Norman Rockwell Busted My Clutch Cable

I discovered that in an emergency, you can shift a Royal Enfield without using the clutch... if you can avoid coming to a complete stop.

This weekend was the last day for the Norman Rockwell Exhibit at the local museum of art. As an artist myself, I've admired Rockwell's idyllic take on happy childhoods and commonplace adult life. I got a little emotional feeling a reverence for seeing these treasures in person. In a sea of cardigan sweaters and polyester slacks, the only guy in a leather jacket, rigid Levis and engineer boots quickly composed himself and moved on.

I rode the 45 minutes to the museum in sunny, Rockwellian weather (60 degrees is nice for January), but on the way home my clutch cable snapped. I guess after 6000 miles of commuting it was time. Turns out, if I could keep rolling I could shift up and down without the clutch. Just goose the gas to shift up, hold on when shifting down, pray for no intersecting traffic, and be prepared to roll through stop signs and lane-split. On Enfields, a clutch cable is a cheap and easy fix.

It's Better In The Wind

Ready to be jealous? What if you were free from all cares and could take off on your bike at any time, in perfect weather, to any destination. That's the what the upcoming independent film titled, "It's Better In The Wind" looks like. I interviewed L.A.-based photographer Scott G. Toepfer, who filmed, edited and experienced these escapes of freedom on location during various cross country rides throughout the Western US.

You'll see some Triumph bikes both bobbed and cafe racer style. As Scott tells it,
"The film is just as much about 'getting away' as it is about motorcycles. The riders aren't exactly featured, it's a group of guys riding and camping and leaving LA as often as possible. The group tends to hover around 4-6 guys, sometimes more, sometimes less depending on the ride."

There was an accompanying book released in 2010 of the same title (Now sold out). Be sure to check out the other teasers for the film on Scott's Vimeo page.

Scott continues, "As for the bikes, there are a couple of modern Triumphs, a couple old Hondas, and my bike is currently a Yamaha xs650. We occasionally cruise with a couple chopper guys on old Harley's, and I think the film will include some footage of them as well. I try not to discriminate too often. The Triumphs tend to take precedence because they are the guys that I am closest with, and have a certain regularity when we go out and shoot. A couple of the bikes are very custom, and a couple are pretty stock. Samson really only rides Japanese stock restoration bikes, which are beautiful. Myself and the Triumph guys tend to be a bit more on the customization side of things."

I'm looking forward to this one. In talking with him, the talented Mr. Toepfer seems to be a genuine guy who loves what he does and shares what he loves.

FYBO indeed! Her Majesty's Thunder is now a regular sponsor of the event with t-shirt giveaways and shop rag swag. It was just 29 degrees when I headed out last Saturday morning to the Freeze Your Balls Off event in Durham, NC. I had about a 40 minute ride ahead of me, but my snowballs were plenty bundled. This was a personal new record for cold riding - previously, 36 degrees was my lowest. I met up with Daniel from Fistful of Choppers along the way which was great - a cool guy (even when it's warmer).

The event is put on by the Incriminators Scooter club at the Fullsteam Brewery there in Durham, NC. Not as many people attended as in 2010 (heck is was 25 degrees warmer) but there were still plenty of scooters and a few motorcycles. The TonUpNC guys were there and they led the hour-long country ride when the temp was still only about 40. There was still ice on the ground in some areas but the roads were mostly clear. The Moped Army of seven showed up to swarm and destroy which was great if not smileworthy. With the noise coming from around the corner, I was sure the junior Shriners were coming. Nice to see more custom two-wheelers anyway.

I'll definitely go again next year.

New Year's eve afternoon weather was finally warmer than freezing so I snuck out for a ride. I visited Rex Floyd at his shop and met a new friend, Patrick Hogan. Patrick was an original British cafe racer from the 60's who spent Friday nights racing with his mates from the Ace Cafe to the Busy Bee and back on a 1937 BSA 750 Twin. Here's how he tells it:

"My dad died when I was five so I grew up with mum who wasn't very wealthy. When I asked for my first motorcycle most kids were getting Triumph Tiger Cubs. I had one all lined up, used of course, but my mum waited too long so I got a used BSA Bantam 125 instead. I really wanted the Triumph!

"When I got a little older I found a beat up 1937 BSA 750 V-Twin for about 5 quid. I had to pull it down out of the fellow's rafters. It had girder forks, rigid rear end and a car tire on the back. It also used to have a side car.

I had trouble with one of the carbs so I only ran it on one cylinder making it a 350. One day my mate helped me fix it so it changed from a 350 to a 750 in an instant. What a difference!"

Here are a couple of photos of my Dad and I in Southern California, on my first motorcycle. I could be wrong, but I don't think my hand-knitted beanie was DOT approved. That's mom in the background, oblivious to Dad's motorbike shenanigans. See the lights on the house? That's really the only evidence that it's Christmas because, well it's California.

Also, I'm quite sure that if I tried this with my 2 year old, my wife would be calling the police!

I shot these photos of my office mate and fellow artist Josh Jay, who sculpted and detailed this amazing replica helmet from the post-apocalyptic video game Fallout 3. I think this would be ideal for cold-weather riding, don't you? It even comes with headlights. So, why can't we get helmets designed like these for riding motorcycles??

...and don't say because they're not safe due to limited visibility, odd angles or something else ridiculously practical.
